I don't play many board games but if you're looking for some reeeeeally cool board games you should try one of these two, the are really good!

Dominion (like a CCG... but in a board game version)
Carcassonne (sooo cool!)

Both really easy to play, hard to master!

Especially Dominion - it is very well done and very entertaining.

Tide of Iron is also good for people who like miniatures, but it is a bit more expensive.

Totally agree here.

Its been a long time since a game like Dominion has been as popular.

We sold out our first shipment quickly, had to wait an age, cause it sold out everywhere.

It now has a couple of expansions.

Carcassonne is a classic, and everyone should have a copy.

Other games I love.

POWERGRID
SETTLERS
RAILROAD TYCOON

Loads more, but I'll post some later.

Settlers is an amazing game. Also Railway Rivals is an older but really good fun game if you have a group of around 4-5 players.

I dont know if you will class Bloodbowl as a board game as such but if you only play with 1 other person its only a model count of 12 figs and its played on a board :p

That Dominion game looks amazing!  I love a good board game, especialy Talisman 2nd Ed.  Not played many of the "greats" but I've enjoyed Settlers of Catan, Titan and a game that I forget the name of, but may be called Wizard Quest.  All I remember about it was getting pumped off the one bad guy playing it.  Recently fired up a bit of Hero Quest - now there's a game.

OK so Dominion is pretty much the best game ever.  I bought the base game a couple weeks ago and we've been playing it pretty solidly ever since.  This prompted Ed to buy Intrigue, and that in turn prompted Larry to buy Seaside and preorder Alchemy, all of which are arriving this weekend (not Alchemy ofc) in time for a massive sesh.  It has also led to the discovery of the greatest website/online software of all time.

BrettSpiel Welt

If anyone likes board games, you should get this software.  It lets you play a whole heap of games, online, for free.  It's totally legal, with a very active and friendly playerbase.  Most notably you can play Dominion (and Carcassone Joao).

Settlers of Catan of course is THE classic modern boardgame but IMHO its limited as a 'gateway' game. If you want to look further into tactics try PUERTO RICO or AGRICOLA. Now these two are damn fine games that are quick enough that everyone is involved all the time and turns revolve fast. It's always a good sign when the game finishes and everyone complains they were on a roll or just getting the hang of it!

Agreed about Dominion being limited.  Has anyone tried "Pandemic"? It's a coop game which actively sets out to make the players lose.

I sell a fair bit of Pandemic but..................co-op games are like a "HUGE" no-no with the guys I play regularly with.

If you can't backstab or screw someone real bad for their error, or just for the hell of it, they don't ever look at it. We tried co-op once with Lord of the Rings............Aragon killed Frodo, sigh...........I think you get the picture  Grin

Co-op games are not games, to some people.

I agree that co-op games aren't to everyone's taste - maybe with the expansion adding the Bio-Terrorist role it may get more play?
